Vermont’s looming labeling mandate will upset our national food supply in a number of ways, from stigmatizing safe ingredients to driving up consumer confusion as a varying patchwork of state labeling laws grows.
The threat of reformulation due to Vermont’s stigmatizing mandate is a very real result of this law going into effect.
And reformulating away from GMO ingredients doesn’t just mean that food costs will go up — it could mean that companies could begin sourcing their ingredients overseas due to limited supply here at home.
Why does that matter?
Not only would that hurt the hardworking American farmers that keep safe, affordable food abundant across our nation, but it could also drive American manufacturing jobs overseas as well, as companies are forced to move closer to the ingredients they use.
Congress has just 30 working days left to block Vermont’s labeling law before these negative effects begin hurting food manufacturers, farmers and American families that rely on safe, affordable food.
The time for action is now.
We are a broad-based coalition representing the entire American agriculture food supply chain – from farm to fork. We are committed to increasing the public’s understanding about the science and safety of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and advocating for science-based policies that keep food affordable for every American.
