COALITION FOR SAFE AFFORDABLE FOOD HIGHLIGHTS MOMENTUM FOR NATIONAL SOLUTION ON GMO LABELING
(Washington, D.C.)—The Coalition for Safe Affordable Food today praised the release of a discussion draft that will enhance the bipartisan Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act. The legislation will be the subject of a U.S. House Energy & Commerce Committee hearing next week. In response to these developments, coalition spokesperson Claire Parker released the following statement:
“Momentum is clearly growing behind this legislation, which would provide a needed federal solution to the patchwork of state GMO labeling laws that would only serve to raise the price of groceries and mislead consumers. This draft language will ensure the legislation can gain even broader support.
“The coalition appreciates Congressmen Pompeo and Butterfield for their strong leadership on this important issue, and the House Energy & Commerce and Agriculture Committees for their commitment in moving the bill forward. We also thank the 60 Members of Congress who have already co-sponsored the legislation.
“This bill will provide consumers with confidence in the safety of GMO foods while also enhancing consumer choice by providing for a USDA administered GMO labeling program similar to the successful National Organics Program. With the first state GMO labeling law set to go into effect next year, the unworkable 50 state patch work has started. It is imperative that this legislation be enacted this year and we believe it will be.”
We are a broad-based coalition representing the entire American agriculture food supply chain – from farm to fork. We are committed to increasing the public’s understanding about the science and safety of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and advocating for science-based policies that keep food affordable for every American.
