Nearly 400 Organizations Sign Letter Backing The Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act

(Washington, D.C.) – In the latest signal that momentum is building behind the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act, 375 organizations from all 50 states and representing every link of America’s food chain sent a letter to members of Congress urging swift passage of the critical legislation.

The group demonstrates the broad, diverse support behind this bill that will create a uniform, science-based food labeling standard.

“We are thrilled by the support of these 373 organizations and look forward to adding additional groups in the days and weeks ahead,” said CFSAF spokesperson Claire Parker. “These groups range from farm to fork along the food chain and all realize how critical it is to advance a uniform, voluntary labeling standard that will provide transparency and clarity for American consumers, farmers and manufacturers.”

Introduced last month in the U.S. House by Congressmen Mike Pompeo (R-KS) and G.K. Butterfield (D-NC), the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act will create a uniform, voluntary food labeling standard for products containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Additionally, the bill will create a national GMO-free certification program, establishing a consistent and understandable labeling framework for consumers across America. Since its introduction, the bill has quickly attracted support, with 30 cosponsors as of today including eight Democrats.

“The breadth of support for this bill speaks for itself,” continued Parker. “The Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act is the most consumer-friendly labeling standard ever introduced in Congress and it will protect Americans from unpredictable price hikes at the grocery store. With the help of these organizations, CFSAF intends to make clear to members of Congress that this bill is desperately needed and must be passed this year. Thanks to the support of these groups, we are one step closer to making that happen.”
